Calcium + Magnesium Urine Test
$319.00
The Calcium + Magnesium Test from Mosaic Diagnostics Laboratory is a urine-based mineral analysis that evaluates levels of calcium and magnesium, two of the body’s most vital minerals. Both play essential roles in bone health, muscle and nerve function, and overall metabolic balance. This test helps identify deficiencies, excess losses, or imbalances that may contribute to a variety of health concerns, including fatigue, cramping, bone weakness, and nervous system dysfunction.
By measuring the urinary excretion of these key minerals, the test provides valuable insight into how well the body is regulating calcium and magnesium. This information can help detect issues related to dietary intake, hormonal control, and kidney function, and may guide nutritional or therapeutic interventions.
CALCIUM
Calcium is one of the most tightly regulated substances in the body, with about 99% stored in bones and teeth. Beyond its structural role, calcium is critical for nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and cellular signaling. Even small decreases in blood calcium can lead to nerve overstimulation and muscle spasms (tetany), a potentially serious condition.
Under normal conditions, calcium levels remain remarkably stable—typically between 9–11 mg/dL—thanks to precise hormonal control. Urinary calcium excretion reflects how the body maintains this balance and can indicate whether dietary intake is adequate.
Low urine calcium levels may suggest:
-
Insufficient calcium intake or absorption
-
High-oxalate diets
-
Vitamin D deficiency
-
Hypoparathyroidism or pseudohypoparathyroidism
-
Thyroid or kidney dysfunction
-
Celiac disease or other malabsorption disorders
High urine calcium can occur during bone remodeling, after fractures, or with certain metabolic or hormonal conditions.
MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is another essential mineral, with approximately two-thirds stored in bone and the rest distributed in soft tissue. It is required for hundreds of enzyme reactions, many of which involve energy metabolism, muscle function, and vitamin B6 activation. Like calcium, magnesium deficiency can cause muscle spasms or tetany, along with fatigue, irritability, headaches, and weakness.
Low urine magnesium may indicate dietary deficiency, poor absorption, or increased cellular use. High urine magnesium can result from excessive dietary intake or may be associated with:
-
Insulin resistance
-
Alcoholism
-
Diuretic use
-
Hyperthyroidism
-
Vitamin D excess
-
Certain medications or toxicities (e.g., gentamicin, cisplatin)
Symptoms of magnesium imbalance may include digestive upset, low blood pressure, muscle weakness, and mood changes.
