Comprehensive Clostridium Culture
$299.00
The Comprehensive Clostridium Culture is a highly specialized stool test designed to identify and differentiate both beneficial and potentially harmful Clostridium species within the gastrointestinal tract (GIT).
Clostridium is a diverse genus of bacteria — many species are normal residents of the gut and play an important role in maintaining digestive health. These beneficial species help break down complex carbohydrates, produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and support healthy immune function.
However, certain toxin-producing Clostridium species are strongly proteolytic, meaning they ferment proteins instead of carbohydrates. This process can generate toxic metabolites such as ammonia, volatile phenols, and indoles — substances known to disrupt cellular function and contribute to neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms.
About the Test
This advanced anaerobic culture is optimized specifically for Clostridium detection and can identify nearly 40 different species — both beneficial and pathogenic — including:
- C. botulinum
- C. tetani
- C. perfringens
- C. difficile
While C. difficile may be present in healthy individuals, it is also a known cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and other gastrointestinal complications.
If C. difficile is detected at any level, the sample is automatically tested for all known toxigenic strains using an FDA-cleared molecular DNA assay — provided at no additional charge — to ensure the highest diagnostic accuracy.
Why This Test Matters
Understanding the balance between beneficial and pathogenic Clostridium species is critical for assessing overall gut health. Overgrowth of toxin-producing strains can affect digestion, immune balance, and even brain function through the gut-brain axis.
This test is especially valuable for individuals with:
- Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea
- Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
- Chronic Digestive Symptoms or Gut Dysbiosis
