Elevated fecal levels of a Zonulin Family Protein (ZFP) have been associated with metabolic syndrome and obesity. These conditions that have been linked to increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) and absorption of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) which creates a systemic inflammatory reaction. LPS is a normal product of the breakdown of Gram-negative bacteria in our digestive tracts. LPS becomes problematic when it gets absorbed into our general circulation and can trigger the systemic inflammation that leads to the development of metabolic syndrome and other disorders.
