Sleep disorders affect 60 million people in the United States. If left unaddressed, sleep issues can affect cognitive ability, memory and motivation. People who sleep only five hours or less per night may suffer from weight gain, food cravings and the need for caffeine to get through the day. Metabolic syndrome and heart disease have also been associated with insomnia as there tends to be glucose and insulin dysregulation from lack of sleep. Shift work, hormonal imbalances, stress, night-time hypoglycemia, exposure to too much blue light in the evening and sleep apnea tend to be major disruptors of a good night’s sleep.
We have an inherent diurnal rhythm that responds to the cycles of light and dark. Cortisol rises to its highest point in the morning within 30 minutes after waking then tapers as the day progresses. As day turns to night, melatonin levels rise in response to darkness. Cortisol is the hormone that energizes us and mobilizes stored energy to get us going in the morning and throughout the day. Melatonin is the hormone associated with sleep and has the opposite rhythm to cortisol. This normal pattern can be disrupted by physiological and lifestyle factors.
The ZRT Sleep Balance Profile provides a urinary measurement of the melatonin metabolite 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (MT6s) in relation to cortisol and cortisone and can reveal the cause of sleep disruption so that correct measures can be taken to restore a healthy sleep pattern. Quite often, difficulty falling asleep can be related to stress and elevated nighttime cortisol levels. Low nighttime melatonin is often the result of too much light and activity late into the evening. Lifestyle measures and proper sleep hygiene can change the ratio between cortisol and melatonin allowing for a more restorative night’s sleep.
Indications for This Test
The ZRT Sleep Balance Profile requires four timed urine collections – first and second morning urine then an evening and nighttime collection. All collections are dried onto paper cards provided in the kit. Please read all instructions carefully before collecting samples. Make sure that the urine has adequate time to dry on the cards before enclosing them in the kit for mailing.
