Porphyrins are generated as the body builds hemoglobin, the compound that carries oxygen in blood cells. Porphyrin (from the Greek word for purple) is made up of four ring compounds joined together, a structure conducive to holding a metal ion in its center, iron in the heme porphyrin of hemoglobin and magnesium in chlorophyll. Small amounts of several porphyrins appear in urine normally. The relative amounts of each porphyrin are altered by certain hereditary diseases and by environmental or nutritional influences. The classic cases of hereditary porphyria displayed highly colored urine and skin eruptions and neurological symptoms of mania and “madness.”
The Porphyrins profile from Mosaic Diagnostics (formerly Great Plains Lab) evaluates for various porphyrins (various chemicals produced in the mitochondria of the cells) which are associated with heme production. Heme is chemical utilized by the body to help carry oxygen, as well as in the brain and liver for detoxification. Porphyrins are sensitive to environmental chemicals, as well as heavy metals such as mercury and lead. An elevation of certain porphyrins can be associated with cellular toxicity secondary to heavy metal exposure. Doctors often use this test to evaluate for cellular toxicity secondary to heavy metal exposure. It is a good idea to perform this test along with a Hair Analysis to more effectively evaluate heavy metal exposure problems.
